Carolus Linnaeus was a scientist who lived in Sweden from 1707 to 1778. When he was a boy, Linnaeus was extremely curious about plants and animals. He loved to spend time in his garden studying and observing them. When he was 25 years old, he went on a six-month adventure. He observed many types of plants, and small and big animals. He wondered if there was a way to group the different types of plants and animals he saw. Together with his students, he decided to group them in such a way that those with similar characteristics were in the same group. Together with his students, he developed a system of classification that is still used even today.
🟢 Paragraph 2 · Four Main Groups of Living Things 生物的四大类
There are many different kinds of living things. Scientists have developed a system to study the different living things in a more systematic way. Living things can be classified into four main groups — plants, animals, fungi and bacteria. (There is a fifth group called protists, which you will learn about in future.) Comparison is a process whereby you look for similarities between two things.
🟢 Paragraph 3 · Plants: Flowering and Non-flowering 植物:开花与不开花
Plants are living things that usually have leaves, stems and roots. They are able to make their own food when there is light. There are many different types of plants around us. Some plants bear flowers, while others do not. Plants can be classified into two groups — flowering plants and non-flowering plants. Flowering plants bear flowers and reproduce from seeds. The flowers develop into fruits. The seeds are found in the fruits. Non-flowering plants do not bear flowers. They reproduce from spores that may be found in spore bags.
