🏠 Magnets in everyday objects ·
Magnets can be found in many everyday objects. The properties of magnets — attracting iron and steel, and like poles repelling — allow us to use magnets in useful ways in our daily lives.
🧊 Refrigerator and Scrapyard ·
Strips of magnets are found inside refrigerator doors. These attract the steel frame of the refrigerator and help to keep the door closed. In a metal scrapyard, a crane with a large iron disc becomes a powerful electromagnet. It attracts objects made of iron and steel, separating them from other non-magnetic materials.
✏️ Whiteboard and Doorstop ·
Some whiteboards have steel sheets under the writing surface. This allows magnets to be attracted to the whiteboards, so we can use magnets to hold things on them. A magnetic doorstop uses a magnet to hold the door in place and prevent it from closing suddenly.
🚄 Maglev Trains ·
Maglev trains have magnets on the bottom of the trains. There are also magnets on the train tracks. The magnets on the train and the tracks are like poles — they repel each other. This allows the train to 'float' above the track. Because there is no friction with the track, maglev trains can travel at very high speeds.
💡 Maglev uses repulsion (like poles). This is different from most everyday magnet uses, which rely on attraction.
🏥 MRI Scanner ·
An MRI scanner (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is used in hospitals. It has a large round magnet with a tunnel in the centre. A patient lies on a table that slides into the tunnel. The magnet takes detailed pictures of the inside of the body. These pictures can help identify problems. MRI is a safe and painless test.

The man who connected magnetism and electricity ·
⚡ Michael Faraday (1791–1867)
Michael Faraday was an English scientist born in 1791. As a teenager, he worked for a bookbinder and read many science books after work. He was particularly interested in magnetism. Faraday is famous for discovering the link between magnetism and electricity. He constructed the world's first electric motor. Today, electric motors are found in everyday appliances like fans and washing machines.
